Tell us a little about yourself!
I am originally from Duhok in Kurdistan, but because my father was a politician, our entire family had to flee to Iran when I was just a few years old. Eventually, I ended up in Sweden.

Being Kurdish often means being multilingual, largely because many Kurds have been forced to relocate due to oppression. For this reason, I speak several languages fluently: Badini, which is my native language, Sorani, Kurmanji, Persian and Dari. I also work as an interpreter in all five of these languages. In addition, I speak Arabic and English for everyday communication.

What qualities make you a good interpreter?
It’s difficult to say, but perhaps it’s because I combine all my languages and knowledge. I have rarely encountered a client who couldn’t understand me.

I always remain neutral, regardless of the situation. I am also a loyal and honest person. I strongly dislike dishonesty, which makes me very strict when it comes to interpreting. I always strive to give my absolute best to earn my fee.

As an interpreter, I carry a great responsibility because I hold another person’s life in my hands. A life that could be put at risk if I am careless or lack the necessary knowledge. That is why it is incredibly important to me to fulfil every interpreting assignment entrusted to me and to strictly respect confidentiality.

Why did you become an interpreter?
I was working as a dental assistant when an acquaintance of mine, who was an interpreter, asked why I hadn’t considered training to become an interpreter myself, given all the languages I spoke.

What do you enjoy most about your profession?
Being able to read about court cases I’ve been involved in in the newspaper and having the opportunity to gain insight into things that happen behind closed doors. That, along with meeting so many wonderful colleagues!

What positive changes have you experienced in your daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic?
I have become even more attentive to my loved ones and try to make the most of every moment we spend together.

In general, I feel that people have grown closer and are more considerate of one another than before. I have also learned to appreciate the little things in everyday life more, and the pandemic has made me reflect on the environment that our children and grandchildren will inherit.
